Announcing the 2012 SAU Tech Distinguished Speaker
Monday, March 12,2011 7:00 PM
Charles O. Ross Center Camden, Arkansas
Dr. Joseph MacInnis was a member of the scientific team that discovered the wreck of the Titanic in 1985 and two years later made his first dive to the wreck. In 1991, he was co-leader of one of the most daring deep sea projects ever conducted: an expedition to film Titanic in the Imax giant-screen format and the first to study the great ship in her biological, geological, and metallurgical contexts. It was this expedition that inspired James Cameron’s Academy Award winning Hollywood film. Dr. MacInnis continues to work with the director on a series of deep-sea documentaries.
Dr. MacInnis is one of the world's foremost deep sea explorers. He has led thirty expeditions and logged more than 5,000 hours under the Great Lakes, the Atlantic, the Pacific, and the Arctic oceans. He was the first person to dive and film under the North Pole and has spent more time diving under the Artic than any other person.
Dr. MacInnis has written numerous articles for newspapers and magazines including Scientific American, National Geographic and Wired. He has written ten books including Underwater Man, Saving the Ocean, Fitzgerald's Storm, Titanic in a New Light, Breathing Underwater and Aliens of the Deep.
Dr. MacInnis' work has earned him a number of distinctions including five honorary doctorates, the Queen's Anniversary Medal, the Admiral's Medal, and his country's highest honor, the Order of Canada.
Join us as we approach the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic and as Dr. MacInnis takes us on the great adventure of underwater exploration. The 2012 Distinguished Speaker event will be held March 12th, 7:00pm at the Charles O. Ross Center in Camden. Admission is free. Seating is limited. For COMPLIMENTARY tickets, call 870.574.4521.
